Ed Giacomin: A Legend Between the Pipes

Edward Giacomin was born June 6, 1939, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He launched his professional hockey career in the minor leagues before making his mark in the NHL.

He played the bulk of his prime years with the New York Rangers (1965-1976) and later with the Detroit Red Wings until his career wound down in 1978. 


Career Highlights & Legacy

  • Giacomin was a five-time NHL All-Star, notable for consistency and resilience in goal. 

  • In 1971, he shared the Vezina Trophy with teammate Gilles Villemure. 

  • Known for his style and connection with the fans, Giacomin had his No. 1 jersey retired by the Rangers, an honor carried out in 1989. 

  • In 1987 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the greats.

Giacomin died Sunday night in his home, as confirmed by the NHL Alumni Association. 

Though his career didn’t bring a Stanley Cup, his laughter-friendly resilience, memorable saves, and wholehearted dedication to the game made him a beloved figure—not just in New York, but across hockey circles. For many fans, he wasn’t just a goalie—he was “Fast Eddie,” a player whose contributions echoed off the boards and into the hearts of generations.
